Small but mighty

This well-known saying applies to the smallest state, because Saarland has plenty to offer. It is one of the warmest regions in Germany. Friends of Nature can go on hikes in the nature preserve Saar-Hunsrück. The most popular tourist attraction in Saarland is an impressive natural wonder, called ‘Saarschleife bei Mettlach’. Inhabitants of Saarland are never more than a 60 minutes’ drive away from the next big city. The automobile industry and the steel industry are important for the economy of Saarland. Visitors have to have a taste of local specialities like ‘Dibbelabbes’ (a dish with potatoes, onions and ring bologna) or ‘Schwenker’ (a special grilled pork). Not for no reason the Saarlanders say: ‘Hauptsach gudd gess!’ (The most important thing is good food). In the federal average, the largest flats in Germany are located in Saarland. There are many unoccupied housings in Saarland, therefore apartment-hunters easily find a new home.

The state capital Saarbrücken

By definition Saarbrücken is the only metropolis in Saarland. Many tourists visit Saarbrücken annually: The city is a popular trade fair location and also interesting culturally, because of the state theatre and many museums. Sights in the inner city are the ‘Ludwigskirche’, the castle of Saarbrücken and a park called ‘Deutsch-Französischer Garten’. The market place ‘St. Johanner Markt’ is a nice place to meet friends. There are numerous cozy cafés and cool bars. Inhabitants of Saarbrücken like to live in the center of the town: in the districts Mitte or St. Johann. Overall there are 20 neighborhoods in Saarbrücken with many green spaces that guarantee a high quality of life.

Other popular cities in Saarland

Homburg

The university town is called Hombourg, because of a ruin named ‘Burg Homburg’. The old castle is worth visiting. The job density is high in Hombourg, because of the university medical center, the Robert Bosch GmbH and the brewery Karlsberg. Visitors can stroll through large woods or visit one of the various markets in Hombourg.

Neunkirchen

The second biggest city in Saarland is known for its big zoological gardens. Neunkirchen has been awarded as ‘musical city’ for many years. Interested amateur actors are able to take an active part in projects or workshops to perform in exciting plays with social themes.

Saarlouis

Special features of the city are the big market place and the hexagonal ground place of the inner city. In the past the planned city had a big fortification. There are lots of festivities in Saarlouis during the year, like the old town festival ‘Emmes’, the Italian passionplay and the fun fair ‘Ludwigskirmes’.
