The apartment is a Maisonnete-WG on the fourth and fifth floors of an old building in Ehrenfeld (Vogelsanger Straße). Don't be intimidated by the ugly stairwell – the inside is quite nice. Downstairs is the bathroom, the smaller room, living room and kitchen.
When you walk up the stairs, there's a shared storage space where we hang our laundry, and to the left and right are our bedrooms. We don't technically have a balcony, but we have a fire escape out the kitchen window that we spend time on. There's a mat so you can walk on it barefoot comfortably, and you can even hang a hammock.
Your room would be on the upper floor of the flat, located next to Connor’s room. It’s roughly 25 square meters and has windows to both sides, so it gets lots of natural light. As the floor is pretty thin and our neighbour downstairs very sensitive, it is crucial that you are a sensitive and considerate person and that you are willing to be quiet in your room after 8 p.m. If you want to invite people over and it is going to be a little louder, it is no problem to gather in the living room and kitchen, as these rooms are pretty sound-proof.

We love where it's situated in the city. It's a 5–10 minute bike ride away from our favorite supermarkets and it's only a 10-minute walk to the U3/4 (Leyendeckerstraße). There's also a bus stop right at the front door.
It's on the quiet side of Ehrenfeld, so you can sleep with your window open.
We all speak Deutsch and English – you can send us Nachrichten in either Sprache :)

As all flatmates will be new when you move in, WG life has to be newly defined. This is how it is now: The atmosphere is warm and caring, but we also all have our own lives. Occasionally we have breakfast together or cook together, a habit, that we would like to establish more in the future. Sometimes we have people over for cooking or friends who stay overnight. Every few months we have a meeting, which we call »Plenum«, in which we talk about WG-related things. We have tried to establish a communication that is open and well-meaning; we all believe that communicating something that bothers us is always better than non-communication or keeping stuff to ourselves. We have a quite elaborated cleaning system, that we would like to continue also with our new flatmates.

Johanna:
I am 33 years old and I work part-time and remote as a designer. I’ve lived in Cologne for more than 11 yrs and I have always been sharing my space with other people, and this is how it should stay in the future, too. I am founding member of a party- and club collective (krakelee eG) and would describe my world view generally as left-wing. I like to cook and I think I can say, that I am quite creative when it comes to cooking.
I am going for a 2 months bike ride, which is why I am renting out my room. I would love for the person who moves into my room to feel at home as much as possible and as a principle I love to share my stuff with them. But as I myself am a person who tries to be very considerate and respectful with other people's things, I would like it if my possessions are handled with care.
Connor:
I’m 28 years old and I’m a musician, composer, and sound technician, originally from the USA. I recently graduated with a masters degree in electroacoustic music, and now I work at Deutschlandradio as my day-job, while also doing various freelance music projects.
I'm very into environmentally-conscious living, and I love to play chess and geek out about various sciencey-things (even when I don't actually understand them). If you get me started on anything to do with outer space, I might carry on for a bit too long (Johanna is nodding next to me as I write this lol).
As for “world-view” kinds of stuff: I eat a plant-based diet, and spend a lot of time reflecting on my consumption choices, which leads me to usually buy things used or just make them myself (there's a pile of scrap-wood upstairs for spontaneous construction projects ;) ). I’m always looking for ways to live a less wasteful life.

The third room in the shared flat will also be rented out when the sublet begins. We are really looking forward to Anne, our new flatmate, because we have a lot in common and she is a wonderfully emphatic and creative person, a good listener, loves cooking and we have already lived with her for a few days.

We would like the person who lives in our apartment to be open, considerate and respectful. It would be nice if you shared some of our world-views, if you make consumption choices with care – and if you like what you read about us and our flat – you should definitely write to us!

If you've got this far and are interested in writing to us, start your message by telling us: if you were a kitchen herb (a "spice plant"), which one would you be – and why?

We would be happy to meet you in person to get to know you, before you move in. In case it is easier for you to first meet online, we could arrange a zoom meeting beforehand.
